President of The United States of America,

Active for 101 years of struggle for 

Freedom of Expression and Peace,

as PEN International, 

the leading worldwide organization of writers, 

translators, journalists and editors, 

we are hopeful when addressing You: 

Is peace vital? 

Is justice necessary for peace?

Is truth necessary for justice?

If the answer is Yes to all three,

then the reply to the fourth question is clear:

Should Julian Assange be free?
